The Dutch people, Molise (Italy) and the lost opportunities - Il Molise, l'Olanda e le opportunità sprecate

You can watch above an interesting news service, about the many Dutch people buying an house in Molise, a quiet, rural and unknown region of central Italy. The news service was aired yesterday by by TG3 Molise (the local division of RAI National TV).
It follows an article published a few weeks ago by the weekly magazine of Corriere della Sera (the Italian most important newspaper)
When I watch it, it gives me mixed feelings.
On the one hand I am pleased: over the past four years I dedicated a lot of efforts promoting Molise in Holland and Holland in Molise. The fact that now this phenomenon is deemed worthy of attention by maintream media (and the TG3 and Corriere della Sera are pretty much mainstream) is a sign that at last here in Molise, someone is starting to notice the phenomenon. Even though "only" 10 years after the first families have bought their house here.
On the other side I am disappointed. How on earth is it possible that 10 years and tens of millions of euros invested by these Dutch families in our rural villages have not been enough to draw the attention of even one of our local building entrepreneurs from their conformist sleep (during all these years they all have been producing just... concrete, basically)?
And this is even more disappointing because the building industry in Molise is one of the few thriving ones (perhaps the only).
In other words, we had the luck to assist to this spontaneous positive form of investment by Dutch people who buy and recover remains in our inner villages (which otherwise would be doomed to abandonment) and we do nothing. Yet often we assist to the birth of brave forms of entrepreneurship from the Dutch people themselves (they sell services centered around this business).
Then one day, we'll probably see some entrepreneurs a little more cultured, probably from abroad, who will buy a whole village, and transform it into a unique investment opportunity, as has already happened in Santo Stefano di Sessanio or Matera.
And people from Molise will watch again, this time a little less indifferent, and a little more envious.

Guardate un pò il servizio del TG3 Molise qui sopra, andato in onda sabato scorso.
Segue di qualche giorno l'articolo di Monica Vignale pubblicato da Io Donna del Corriere della Sera.
La sua visione suscita in me sentimenti contrastanti.
Da un lato sono compiaciuto: è da ormai quattro anni che mi occupo di questo fenomeno, promuovendo il Molise in Olanda e gli olandesi in Molise, e il fatto che tutto ciò sia ritenuto degno dell'attenzione mediatica maintream (e il tg3 e IoDonna sono abbastanza mainstream, no?) è un segno che finalmente anche qui in Molise, 10 anni dopo che le prime famiglie si sono insediate - ad oggi sono una ventina) qualcuno finalmente sta cominciando ad accorgersi del fenomeno. E questo è un bene, per tutti noi.
Dall'altro lato sono amareggiato: possibile che 10 anni e decine di milioni di euro investiti da questi olandesi nei nostri borghi non sono stati sufficenti a far svegliare nemmeno uno degli imrenditori nostrani dal torpore conformistico (cemento, cemento, cemento!) cui sono costretti?
E dire che quella edile in Molise è una delle poche industrie fiorenti (forse l'unica) : potremmo forse dimenticare i virtuosismi espressi dall'industria edile a San Giuliano di Puglia? O il lucroso fermento edilizio di Termoli?
Insomma: abbiamo olandesi che girano nei nostri paesini e recuperano in maniera straordinaria ruderi destinati all'abbandono (spesso anche guadagnandoci, e vendendo servizi e consulenze), restituendo vita a graziosi paesini che altrimenti sarebbero destinati a morte certa e noi lasciamo fare così, con indifferenza.
Poi, un giorno, constateremo che qualche imprenditore un pò più acculturato, magari straniero, si comprerà un paese intero, e lo trasformerà una straordinaria opportunità di investimento, come del resto è già successo a Santo Stefano di Sessanio o a Matera.
E noi molisani staremo a guardare, stavolta un pò meno indifferenti, e un pò più invidiosi.
